Ontario's wine industry is centred in the Niagara Peninsula with more than 70 wineries and 16,000 acres of vitis vinifera grapes. Sales in Ontario were $327 million for 2000. The industry currently employs more than 5,000 people and has experienced rapid growth over the past decade.
A Vision for the Year 2020:
The Ontario wine industry will be a $1.5 billion industry and a major contributor to Ontario's economic growth and prosperity.
The Ontario wine industry currently employs more than 5,000 people and is poised for continued growth in the next decade. The Wine Council of Ontario predicts that the industry will employ more than 13,500 people by 2020.
Ontario wine consumers will choose Ontario reds and whites for more than 60% of their premium wine purchases.
More than 90% of the grapes grown in Ontario will be used to produce premium VQA wines.

What is VQA?
Vintners Quality Alliance sets the standards for Ontario wines. If the wine bottle bears the VQA medallion, the wine has been made from 100% Ontario-grown grapes. These wines are subject to rigorous quality tests. The mark of the VQA guarantees that consumers will be drinking the finest quality Ontario wine.
